Great American Backyard Campout

Great American Backyard Campout

OK campers! Gather your tents, sleeping bags, marshmallows and headlamps, we’re off to the great outdoors! We’re off to the backyard! No really, what better way to get your little ones ready for the camping season than a fun, low-key backyard campout that doesn’t require any long car rides or that you bring your own toilet paper.

The Fourth Annual Great American Backyard Campout, sponsored by the National Wildlife Federation, is a one night event that encourages parents, kids and communities to reconnect with nature and the outdoors in a simple and memorable way. Whether you are an experienced camper who can erect a tent in under 60 seconds, or a first time camper who has just bought their first sleeping bag, this event is a great way for kids of all ages to have some fun under the stars.

Since the first Great American Backyard Campout in 2004 the number of campers has steadily grown. In 2007 over 40,000 individuals participated in the event and so far this year (at last check on their website) there are currently 15,925 campers registered! Campers are encouraged to join up with other families in their community to camp out together in the backyard or at a local public campground, so grab some friends and get together around the campfire. Here’s what one camper had to say about their experience -  ”About half of our block came out to our campout - moms, dads and kids. It was great! The kids loved it so much they want to do it again. The parents enjoyed it too.”

The wonderful thing about this event is that it is very accessible and easy for campers of any age. In previous years, campers ranged in age from 3 months to 99 years old and campsites were set up in all areas of the country.

We will be hosting our own MySprout Basecamp campout and will follow up with future posts on the event so stay tuned…

Happy camping!
